One of the crazy, yet fun things that we did in Maui was go zip lining. We bought the 3 zip package just because we didn't know exactly what to expect when we got there and if we would want to do more than 3. They also had a 6 zip and a 9 zip package. The 9 zip package included the side by side line that was a half mile long. Wowza! So we got up early on Valentine's morning and headed up to the woods. The first thing they did when we got there was to weigh us. They have a 250 pound weight limit and they do not take your word for it. I was pleased to see that I had lost another 2.6 pounds since the day I saw the oncologist a few weeks ago. Woohoo!
Next they got us strapped into our safety gear. Shad was looking pretty cool because he didn't need any help putting his on. He wears it at work, so it was no big deal to him. (In fact, standing on a platform 100 feet up in a tree was no big deal to him either. Show off.) Check us out!
I was feeling pretty confident until we started to ascend up to the first platform. It was literally up in a tree with no railing around it. As we stood there my legs and hands started to shake and I don't think I could have hugged the tree any tighter.
This bridge looks crazy, but we actually flew over the bridge.
After the first zip, the fear started to trun to excitement and fun anticipation. It did help that the last two platforms were not quite as high in the tree as the first.
Here I was trying to be cool and kind of hang off the platform. I was trying to "trust" my safety gear.
This was the last line. It was so long and went through the trees, so you couldn't even see the other end from the first platform. They said it was about 1000 feet long. It. Was. A. BLAST! I even got brave and let go of the handle bars which allows you to twist around and just hang in the harness. Needless to say, my fear was pretty much gone. Shad and I both wished that we had signed up for the 9 zip package so we could do them all.
After we zip lined, we drove through the little hippie town at the bottom of the hill. Our zip line guide said it was a good place to get some organic hippie food, or anything else "organic" that we might be looking for. Shad and I both laughed at that, you know, because that is so us. We headed up the coast to a look out where we watched a bunch of guys that were surfing. This spot was well known for wind surfing, but we only found a bunch of surfers and one guy paddle boarding/surfing. He was pretty impressive to watch.
After we returned to the hotel, I was sleepy, so I laid down and took and afternoon nap. Ah, vacation, how I love you.
Next we showered and got gussied up for our 20th Valentine's Day dinner.
We went to a fancy restaurant in Lahaina called David Paul's Island Grill. The food was great, but Shad and I realized that we feel a little out of place at such a fancy restaurant. The waitor asked Shad if he wanted something for his first course and he had no idea that he was talking about soup or salad. Also the only thing they offered for drinks was wine, mixed drinks or Fiji filtered water. We just wanted a Coke! I wouldn't say we are hillbillies, but that place was a little fancy for us.
After dinner, my guts got a little upset as they were still recovering from the Cheeseburger in Paradise that I had eaten the day before (I can be a little high maintenance when it comes to my guts and high fat foods), so we headed back to the hotel so I could lay down for a bit. Very romantic, I know. So we just hung out in our room the rest of the night watching TV and not having to threaten a spanking to the next kid that comes down stairs, so it was actually quite nice. A relaxing end to a big Valentine's day. Pretty much the best one yet!
