Haiti, Day 2 Recap

We have pictures!!!

Thanks to Shad’s Surface and a cord that we borrowed from a friend, we can officially download pictures!!  All that being said, I didn’t take very many today.  It was a busy day and I just forgot to get it out.

We spent most of the day at the Heartline property called the OK.  I love going there because it is a peaceful retreat from the crazy busy street and traffic just outside the property wall.  I remember the first time we arrived and they shut the gate.  Besides the occasional siren or horn honking, you can’t even hear the traffic.  It was a welcome respite the first time we arrived back in January.  The many large trees provide a lovely shade from the hot sun.

This little guy was enjoying the shade when we first arrived.  He even let me pet him.

These men are learning how to grow in their relationships with God and how to disciple other men in their communities.  They come Monday through Friday for bible study with their teacher Moise (in the yellow shirt), a kind man of God.  Once a week, they go to a prison for teen men and worship, pray and mentor with them.  They also get to learn how bake bread and make pizza at the bakery.  After they graduate they have skills to get a job, some even end up working at the bakery.  More importantly, these men graduate with with a deeper relationship with God that they can use to go and mentor other men.

I spent most of the day interviewing the women in the education program.  They come to learn skills like sewing, cooking, crafting and even simply how to read and write.  It was so cool to learn about their dreams after they graduate and how they want to use the skills that they learn.  Most of the women seemed so shy and it took quite bit to draw them out.  I also had a lot of time to talk to the translators and learn so much about Haitian culture and life.

We ended the day taking a tour of the maternity center, which I love!

We had a great day, sweat and all!
