For Memorial Day weekend we decided to go camping. In years past decided would not have been the word I would have used. I would have said we went camping because it was just what we would do. There was no having to put a lot of thought into whether or not we had the energy or desire because we always did. This year, Shad and I were tired and had very little motivation to do anything. Neither one of us could handle the idea of packing, hitching up the trailer and driving somewhere, but we decided to do it anyway. Let me tell you, if we were going to back out it would have been Friday evening. As we packed the trailer, the sky turned darker and darker and then the thunder and lightning started. I looked at Shad and asked him if it was a bad omen to be packing up to leave while a thunder storm was blowing in. He just smiled. Well the giant rain drops literally started as we climbed into the truck to leave. We felt bad for the dog in the back of the truck, but neither one of us wanted to get out in the rain to put her in the trailer.
As we drove down the highway, we watched the lightning in the distance while trying to see the road that was covered with standing water as the rain came down in sheets. Thankfully, Shad is very experienced at pulling the trailer, so I was only afraid once or twice. Once we got over the mountains, the thunder storm became a distant memory and we were left with partly cloudy skies.
Besides a couple light sprinkles, it didn't rain for the rest of the weekend. But,the rain that we had had on Friday made for some pretty amazing mud holes that the kids were happy to play in. Really, Josh only rode his bicycle through the puddles, it was the girls that played in the mud.
Hannah and her cousin, Rylee at the start of the day.
And here is Hannah mid day. She didn't mess around. And way in the back is Cousin Norah who is just as muddy as Hannah. They made mud pies all day long.
Someone had put up this huge hanger-upper thingy in the trees and left it, so Shad and his brother, Greg, being the ever prepared guys that they are, dug some rope and a cable out of their tool boxes and made an awesome swing.
It swung out over the side of a small hill, so it felt like you were flying, which Hannah really enjoyed.
I tried to swing with Bethany, she was not as much of a fan.
What can I say, I liked it too.
Hannah may have liked it a little too much. All weekend it was, "Mommy! Daddy! Grandma! Greg! Michelle! Give me an under dog! Push me!"
Bethany got her first ride on a motorcycle. She handled it in her usual way. No expression what so ever.
Cousin Mason got his first ride too. He handled it the same way Bethany did only with his binky in.
There's Hannah and Rylee. The two of them couldn't decide who's turn it was, so they went together. Yet another adventure you can't remove Hannah from. She's our little dare devil.
By the way, Josh was there too. I don't know why I didn't get any pics of him. Hannah is always right there for a photo op, but Josh, he's illusive, you know, like Big Foot.
Bethany wanted to walked around in her bicycle helmet as much as possible. This was probably not a bad thing as she had to be very careful when maneuvering her clod hoppers on the gravel. She fell so many times, I kind of stopped checking on her. About 15 minutes after an ignored post-trip cry, she walked up to me and had 4 or 5 red marks on her face all about the size of a piece of gravel. Oops, I guess that really did hurt. Sorry, Bethers.
Grandma Connie and Cousin Zach, twins!
It turned out to be a very fun trip. Shad was a little disappointed in his lack of being in shape after riding his dirtbike30 miles and being totally sore and tired, but I made him feel better by reminding him that he's not out of shape, he's just getting old.
