VBS, pools and other stuff

It's been so busy around here the last couple of weeks and this one is no different.  It's VBS week at our church.  Hannah is old enough to go, so she is in the 4 year old class, Josh the first grade class and I am volunteering as a nurse, so Bethany gets to spend the day in child care.  She's the only little baby, so she gets to ride around on the childcare coordinator's shoulder all morning.  It's pretty cute.  I sit at a table and field all the tummy aches, "sprained" ankles, inhalers, Epi pens and place band aids on 2 day old scabs.  It's fun.  I mostly sit at the nurse's table and visit with girlfriends.  Fellow mom's enjoying a morning with no kids while being helpful by volunteering.

Today my sister-in-law and fellow band aid applier, and a friend, Kelly, decided to take the kids to a pool in a town 30 minutes south of ours after VBS.  So we hurried home, I packed a quick lunch to eat in the car, I tried on every bathing suit I own and settled on shorts and a tank top, stuffed a binky in a getting hungry Bethany, and off we went.  The pool was great.  Even Bethany loved it.  The kids played for about 2 1/2 hours, and Bethany even held off crying for food until we got there.

After the pool I decided to go visit some friends that live in the same town, since we were so close.  So I called Debbie and she said to head on over.  It was great to visit with her while the kids all played together.  (She has 2 kids.)  Even though we dropped in at the last minute, Debbie was kind enough to feed us dinner.  I should have known something was wrong because Josh didn't want anything to eat or drink the whole time we were there.  But, no, I just figured he was too busy playing, so I didn't make him eat.  I realized after we arrived that I only had enough formula for one bottle for Bethany.  Thankfully, after calling 3 stores, we found one that carries her special, milk protein allergy, formula.  And even better was that Jeff (Debbie's husband) had just called to say he was on his way home, so he stopped and picked up a can for Bethany.  That was awesome!  Oh, did I mention that Bethany rolled from her back to her tummy for the first time while we were there?  It was so cute!

About 8 o'clock I finally decided that we should head home.  I wanted to get the kids to bed since we had to get up early for day 3 of VBS.  Debbie sent them both with a bag of crackers to eat on the way.  Josh didn't want any.  Josh declining a snack, yet another clue that something wasn't right with him.  Josh and Hannah both fell asleep on the way home.  (Almost unheard of for Josh.  Hello, Mom!)  When we pulled into the driveway, Bethany screaming, at 9 o'clock at night, we were bombarded by all the neighbor kids (a regular occurrence).  They wanted to know if the kids could stay out and watch fireworks.  I was telling them no as I pulled a screaming Bethany out of her car seat only to whack her head on the door.  Now she was silent screaming.  You know the one where it looks like they're screaming, but no sound is coming out.  I walked into the house to put her down and tell (in a very annoyed voice) the big kids to please go back out to the car and get all their wrappers, toys, blankies and other random junk out of the car.  Hannah was beyond tired, so she just started to cry at the request, which only annoyed me more, causing me to raise my voice, "Please go out to the car and get your stuff out!"  They both complied and climbed into the way back seat of the car.

Now this is the DUH moment for Mom.  They were taking longer than I wanted them to, so I stomped outside to see what the hold up was.  They were both just sitting there, Josh with his back to me.  "What is taking so long?  Get your stuff and come in...please!"  That is when I realized what the hold up was.  Josh had walked across the entirely hose able driveway and climbed into my carpeted car only to puke all over the floor.  Poor Hannah was trapped because Josh was between her and the door.  I heard neighbor kids, as they ran across the street, saying how gross that was.  Oh brother!  Meanwhile Bethany is still in the house screaming, out loud by this time.

I could have panicked.  I could have run into the house and cried.  I could have run down the street and never come back.  But, I didn't.  I took the kids in and sent them to their room to put on jammies.  I made Bethany a bottle and propped it up for her.  Then I spread a very large blanket on the floor and made Josh a bed on it.  Then we prayed for Josh and I tucked the kids into bed.  And before I left their room I gave Josh strict instructions that if he was going to throw up again, to prop himself up on his elbow and to aim into the barf bowl.  By that time Bethany had finished her bottle and was full of smiles, so I put her jammies on, laid her on the floor with toys, did the dishes and washed bottles, went to the bathroom then put on my comfy jammies.  When I walked into the living room Bethany was just dozing off, so I picked her up, took a huge whiff of her sweet, sweet baby smell then put her to bed.  Now I sit here blogging about my crazy day, all the while praying that it doesn't drizzle tonight because I left the windows on my car cracked open in hopes that the puke smell will dissipate from inside.

The End

Well, at least, I hope that's the end of the puking.

OH man! We know the puke routine all too well around here. Praying he recovers quickly and no one else gets it. You did an amazing job holding it together after such a long day. Pat yourself on the back mama!
