Swim

I took the kids to the pool at the gym this afternoon. Hannah has been begging since we joined the gym and she has had to watch people going from the locker room to the pool every Friday when I take her down there with me. I kept putting her off saying we will soon. So today I decided to make it happen.

It has been since this summer that the kids have been swimming and I was reminded of something while we were at the pool...my daughter has very little fear of the water. She is part fish without the actual swimming ability. This can be quite scary because she didn't seem to care that my back was turned so she just jumped off the side of the pool into my "arms" which happened to be my shoulders and back. Never mind that it was painful to me to have a 26 pound monkey jump on my back at full force, but that monkey also bounced off my back and became submerged in the water. I guess it was a good lesson for her to actually be "thrown" into the deep end, only she did it to herself.

The next thing I was reminded of was that Josh is much more cautious in the water. He keeps his life jacket on all the time, even sitting in the hot tub. But today he was jumping in the water, head going under, all by himself. He was also floating on one of those noodle things and paddling himself across the pool. He is doing so well with going under the water and has the cutest grin on his face the whole time he is in the water. I think with some swimming lessons Josh will gain confidence and Hannah will learn some skills to go with her confidence which will make them both safer in the water.

Something new that I learned today, which was the most important was this: if a man goes to the pool to do some laps, he may wear what looks like biking spandex...and nothing else, except that little swimming cap. And if he is, be very careful NOT to be down in the pool and accidentally look up just as he is full frontal walking toward you. Ummmm...frank and beans! Sorry, it had to be said. Spandex leaves NOTHING to the imagination. I'll leave you with that mental picture.
